Stainless steel pipework is used in process piping in such as chemical or pharameutical industries, oil and gas, food and beverage and water industries, amongst others.
Stainless steel is much more resistant to corrosion than ordinary carbon, mild or alloy steels and can be sterilised for use in hygienic pipework, where health and safety legislation requires it, e.g. in food processing. Additionally, stainless steel pipework has a lower coefficient of friction compared to carbon steel pipes and it has good strength and ductility and with high corrosion resistance and easy welding, water leaks can be drastically reduced, probably from around 25% down to less than 5%, leading to further cost savings.
As stainless steel pipework is resistant to crevice corrosion, cavitation and wear in pure and polluted waters as well as in atmosphere (even polluted), they are cost effective for long term use and do not cause environmental pollution. They are also 100% recyclable and a part of their initial cost may be recoverable when they are recycled.
